Newborn Session Information

The Details

Prior to your photo session I will get all of the details from you about whether the session will include any siblings, parents, grandparents, etc. We will make sure to talk about the style of shots you are hoping to achieve, and whether there are any specific backdrop colors, props, or poses you want to use.

Each and every session is custom tailored to meet your design tastes and color scheme. I strive to include at least one completely new setup or prop with every newborn photo shoot I do, and more often than not, there are actually several props that are new with each session.

When you leave you will confidently be able to say that your session was entirely custom to you, your family, and your sweet new addition.

The Paperwork

At this point in time I am available to do newborn sessions on the weekend only. Due to my limited availability, please contact me during your second trimester (if possible) to schedule your photo session.

I will schedule your session for the weekend following your estimated due date. Your session fee is to be paid in full in order to reserve your session’s date & time. Of course, baby will come whenever he or she decides, so your session might be moved after your baby arrives. I will contact you during the last few weeks of your pregnancy looking for an update to your progress.

Once baby is born, give me a call, send me a text or email so we can finalize your session date & time. For best results with posing, we will try to schedule your newborn session within the first two weeks (14 days) after your baby’s birthday.

You will have both a contract and a model release form available to review via email prior to the photo session. You may sign and return these prior to the session.

If I do not have these forms on file, you will be required to sign them prior to the start of the photo session.

Also, please review the print & product pricing provided via email. We will be able to discuss which items you are interested in purchasing, so that I have these things in mind while designing your session.  I have studio samples of almost all of my products, so please feel free to inquire during your session as well.

What to Wear

I prefer to photograph newborns naked or wearing cute knits or wraps.  However, if you have an outfit that carries special meaning, we can certainly include pictures of the baby fully dressed.

I have a lot of wraps and accessories that I will plan to use during your photo session. If you have something that you would like to bring from home or something that was purchased specially for your baby’s newborn pictures (headbands, hats, stuffed animals, blankets, etc…), please let me know beforehand, so that I can plan to incorporate these items during your session.

For the family or sibling pictures most families prefer to coordinate colors and styles, the results of which can be very pleasing to the eye. Check out Pinterest for ideas about complimentary colors and coordination.

All I truly care about is that everyone is dressed in something that feels comfortable.  Also, if you have little girls in dresses, consider layering with a similar colored short, in order to minimize the number of shots with diapers or underwear showing.

The Session Preparation

Please bring your newborn to the studio hungry and tired. Try not feed your baby for at least 3 hours prior to your session. Also, do not let the baby sleep in the car on the way to the studio.  Once you arrive you will give your baby a full feeding and hopefully they will then fall into a deep sleep.

Parents should also feel encouraged to bring along any additional items that have shown to provide comfort and soothing (swaddles, pacifiers, etc) to help the session go more smoothly.

Most of my newborn sessions start at 9am and last about 3-4 hours. We try to be finished up by lunch, but sometimes session can run long.  Please bring snacks, drinks, and any supplies that you, your newborn, and any other children might need during your stay at my in-home studio.

While it is possible to do a newborn shoot on location, I have found that the sheer volume of props & posing equipment required makes it much easier on everyone if we book the session at my in-home studio space. To help the baby stay calm and relaxed, I heat the studio to a temperature between 80-85 degrees and have a white noise machine playing in the background.

I also have a couple of brand new Soothie pacifiers on hand, but parents should feel encouraged to bring along any additional items that have shown to provide comfort and soothing (swaddles, pacifiers, etc) to help the session go more smoothly.

We work so hard to get baby to sleep because those snuggly newborn positions that are so beautiful will typically only work with a newborn who is fast asleep and relaxed enough to be posed. An awake baby can be photographed in many positions as well. If baby refuses to fall asleep, but is content to be put down, we will most likely swaddle them and continue with the session.

Regardless of whether your baby is awake or asleep, you will leave the session knowing that I captured more than enough material to fill your gallery with beautiful images of your newborn and family.Mateo05_web

Unless otherwise noted, it should take no more than 2 weeks to edit and prepare your images. I will contact you once your images are ready to schedule a viewing and ordering session.  This is where you will be able to view your images and finalize your product selections.

Once I payment is made, I will place your finalized order. Depending on your choices, it should take anywhere from two weeks to a month to receive your prints and products. I will contact you in order to arrange pickup, delivery, or shipping of the items to your home residence.  If you purchase A La Carte digital files, I will send you an email with access to your chosen digital files via online gallery.   If you purchase a collection, you will receive a flash drive with your included files, as well as watermarked web-sized files.
